Title | A study on low cost, environmentally friendly and non toxic functional material for various applications |
Abstract | Functional materials are designed to perform a function through a response to electric, magnetic, thermal, or chemical stimulation. With strong structures, they are used as semiconductors, superconductors, biomaterials, piezoelectric, and intelligent materials. YSZ is composed of Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) and Yttrium oxide (Y2O3) is added to stabilize the ZrO2 in a cubic or tetragonal crystal form at room temperature. YSZ is widely used material because of its high mechanical properties, thermal stability, and ionic conductivity. YSZ is resistant to heat and chemicals because of this stabilization, and thus it is used for all applications. One of its most important applications is in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), in which it serves as an electrolyte to efficiently convert chemical energy into electrical energy. YSZ is also applied in thermal barrier coatings, oxygen sensors, and as a substrate in thin films in the production of semiconductors. |
