Expert lecture on Lean six sigma

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized an expert lecture on Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma at the A-Block Auditorium on 18th April 2026. The session focused on quality improvement techniques and efficient production systems used in modern industries.

The lecture began with an introduction to the concept of waste in manufacturing and the 8 Wastes (TIMWOODS). The expert explained how eliminating these wastes helps improve productivity and operational efficiency. Important Lean tools such as 5S, Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Kaizen, SMED, Poka-Yoke, and Kanban were discussed in detail, highlighting their applications in workplace organization, continuous improvement, and inventory management.

The session also covered key Six Sigma concepts including the DMAIC methodology and DPMO (Defects Per Million Opportunities), which are widely used for process improvement and quality control. Students gained awareness about Statistical Quality Control (SQC) and international certification bodies like ASQ and IASSC. The concept of benchmarking was also explained to help students understand industry best practices.

Overall, the lecture was informative and interactive, enhancing students’ understanding of Lean and Six Sigma methodologies and their importance in manufacturing and quality engineering.
