Ahmedabad: "Most people know only 25% about ISRO. Today, let's explore the remaining 75%." With these thought-provoking words, Dr. Nilesh M. Desai, Former Director of the Space Applications Centre (SAC), ISRO, captivated hundreds of newly admitted students during an inspiring session at the Student Induction Program 2026 hosted by Vishwakarma Government Engineering College (VGEC), Chandkheda. More than a lecture, the session offered students a fresh perspective on the unseen world of innovation that powers India's journey in space. As India continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in science and technology, the responsibility of carrying this legacy forward now rests with the next generation of engineers. Reinforcing this vision, Principal Dr. V. S. Purani encouraged students to view engineering not merely as a profession but as a means of nation-building, emphasising that every great innovation begins with a curious and responsible mind.
Moving beyond rockets and satellite launches, Dr. Desai introduced students to the larger ecosystem that makes India's space achievements possible. He explained how innovation, research, advanced technologies, startups and interdisciplinary collaboration are creating new opportunities for young engineers to contribute to the nation's progress. Highlighting the success of Skyroot Aerospace as an inspiring example of India's rapidly growing SpaceTech ecosystem, he emphasized that its journey demonstrates how great engineering begins with solving real-world problems and that today's students have the potential to become tomorrow's innovators. He encouraged students to stay curious, embrace lifelong learning and look at engineering as a means to solve real-world challenges rather than simply earn a degree.
The session inspired students to think beyond conventional career choices and recognize that the future of engineering lies in innovation, entrepreneurship and meaningful problem-solving. By sharing his experience and vision, Dr. Desai highlighted that India's technological future will be shaped not only by scientists working in laboratories but also by young minds willing to dream big, build bigger and transform ideas into impact.
