Basic Rock Climbing Course Participation by NSS VGEC

19 February, 2024

The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Vishwakarma Government Engineering College (VGEC) actively participated in the Basic Rock Climbing Course conducted at Swami Vivekananda Institute of Mountaineering (SVIM), Mount Abu, from 10th to 19th February 2024. This 10-day adventure training camp aimed to equip participants with essential rock climbing skills, safety techniques, and leadership qualities.

Participants from NSS VGEC:

  1. Vrushti Patel (CE, 3rd Semester)
  2. Jay Patel (Chemical, 5th Semester)

Training Activities:

1. Rope-Tying Techniques:
The course began with an introduction to various rope-tying techniques. Participants learned different types of knots, including:

  • Figure-eight knot - Used for securing the climbing rope.
  • Clove hitch - Useful for anchoring at different points.
  • Double fisherman's knot - Used for joining two ropes securely.
  • Bowline knot - Essential for creating a fixed loop in the rope.

These techniques were crucial for ensuring safety and stability during climbing and rappelling exercises.

2. Climbing Techniques:
Participants were trained in two fundamental rock-climbing techniques:

  • Two-Point Climbing Technique - Maintaining two points of contact with the rock at all times for balance.
  • Three-Point Climbing Technique - Keeping three points of contact (either two hands and one foot or two feet and one hand) for better grip and stability.

3. Rappelling and Belaying:

  • Rappelling: Participants practiced controlled descent techniques using a rope and belay device, which is crucial for safely coming down steep rock surfaces.
  • Belaying: Training included assisting climbers by securing their rope, ensuring safety during ascents and descents.

4. Understanding Different Types of Rocks and Chimneys:
The course also covered rock identification and climbing techniques for different formations, including:

  • Boulders - Large rocks requiring short but powerful climbs.
  • Slabs - Inclined rock surfaces demanding good balance.
  • Vertical Walls - Steep climbs that require a strong grip and endurance.
  • Chimneys - Narrow gaps between rock surfaces that require special climbing methods.

5. Duty Officer Responsibility:
Apart from physical training, participants were also assigned Duty Officer responsibilities, which included:

  • Managing team coordination.
  • Ensuring safety measures were followed.
  • Assisting instructors in organizing sessions.

Conclusion:
The Basic Rock Climbing Course at Swami Vivekananda Institute of Mountaineering (SVIM), Mount Abu, was an incredible learning experience. It enhanced physical endurance, technical climbing skills, and teamwork abilities. The course also helped develop leadership and responsibility, which will be valuable in future outdoor and adventure activities.

This experience has encouraged participants to pursue more mountaineering challenges and contribute to adventure sports in the future.
