About the Club:

To enhance communication and employability skills of our engineering students, Mission English was initiated in February 2019. The objectives of the student-driven initiative are to enable students for their interaction in English and to boost their confidence through various activities; to make students comfortable in an English-speaking environment. It is coordinated by Dr Vaseem Qureshi (Assistant Professor, English, Science and Humanities Department, VGEC).

About the Event (Introduction):

The Mission English initiative aims to cultivate communication excellence among students through interactive, skill-focused sessions. These sessions are scheduled every Wednesday from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM and are led by student coordinators from various branches. Activities include debates, creative writing, dialogue performances, listening and speaking drills, and more. The consistent structure and variety of topics help students gradually improve fluency, confidence, and language articulation.

Objectives:

  • To enhance English communication skills among students.
  • To promote peer-to-peer learning through student-led sessions.
  • To encourage creative and critical thinking using language-based activities.
  • To boost public speaking confidence in a collaborative environment.
  • To make language learning engaging and application-oriented.

Conduction of the Event:

The February–April 2024 sessions of Mission English focused on refining a variety of core English communication skills in a practical, interactive environment. Held every Wednesday from 9:00 to 10:30 AM at the Language Lab, E-Block (VGEC), each session was coordinated by enthusiastic student leaders who guided their peers through engaging activities.

The sessions covered:

  • Situational Communication, led by Netri Trivedi, to improve real-life spoken responses.
  • Language through Lyrics, by Mrunal Salunke, combining music and learning.
  • Interactive Chit-Chat, coordinated by Angel Christian, promoting free-flowing English conversation.
  • Reading Skills, facilitated by Suchit Sharma, helping students improve comprehension and fluency.
  • Vocabulary Building, conducted by Lipi Langalia through creative games and exercises.
  • Critical Thinking and Creative Writing, with Aaria Joshi and Rahul Rajput respectively, sparking analytical and imaginative use of English.
  • General Writing and Public Speaking, led by Vishwa Arya and Neonica Rai, focusing on structured expression and confident delivery.
  • The session concluded with Listening Skills, curated by Ashish Ramanuj, through active listening tasks and audio-based comprehension.
  • Each session encouraged active student participation and was aligned with the club’s mission to develop confident English communicators.

Outcomes:

  • Enhanced student confidence in speaking English.
  • Significant improvement in public speaking and articulation.
  • Development of leadership and teamwork through student coordination.
  • Creation of a supportive space for language learning.
  • Recognition of Mission English as a sustained, impactful activity under VGEC’s language development initiatives.
