The Department of Mechanical Engineering successfully organized an insightful expert session on the topic “Metallurgical Importance of Heat Treatments, Phase Diagram, and its Effect on the Microstructural Phases.” The lecture was delivered by Dr. Mrunal Chaudhari, an eminent expert in the field of metallurgy and materials science.
The session began with a brief introduction to the fundamental concepts of heat treatment processes such as annealing, normalizing, quenching, and tempering. Chaudhari explained how these treatments alter the mechanical properties of metals like hardness, toughness, and ductility by modifying their microstructural phases.
A major focus of the session was on the Phase Diagram, which serves as a map for understanding equilibrium states of alloys at different temperatures and compositions. The significance of the Iron–Carbon Phase Diagram was discussed in detail, highlighting critical transformations such as eutectoid and eutectic reactions, which play a vital role in the design and processing of steels.
Students also gained knowledge about the practical applications of heat treatment in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and tool manufacturing. Real-world case studies and examples made the session highly interactive and impactful.
