Training Program on - Process Engineering and Design (Session - 8)

24 April, 2021

The Chemical Engineering Department under the Institution of Engineers India (IEI)  organized an online training program on ‘Process Engineering and Design’ from February to April 2021. The session-8 of the following training program entitled “Instrumentation for Process Engineers” was organized on 24/04/2021, on Microsoft Teams under the coordination of Prof. U. P. Christian & Prof. S. B. Thakore. The webinar was conducted by expert Shri Ashwin Chandrana (Proprietor, Entech Engineers, Vadodara). The session was attended by 58 UG & PG students of Chemical Engineering from various institutes of Gujarat.

The prime objective of this training program was to discuss the stepwise procedure for the design of process plant equipment such as shell & tube heat exchanger, distillation column, pump, flowmeters and piping. Guidance about the selection criteria among the different types of equipment & the mechanical design of pressure vessels was also provided. The students were made aware of the software such as HTRI and ASPEN for the design and simulation of equipment with the help of different case studies.

During the session, the expert Shri Ashwin Chandrana discussed the importance of instrumentation in process engineering and design, common types of field instruments for various unit operations & components in process instrumentation and control. He also discussed various case studies of the detailed process data sheet for instrumentation. The participants understood the components of the instrumentation loop & the selection criteria of various instrumentation and process control elements for chemical processes. They were also made aware of the operation of different process control elements. The expert Shri Ashwin Chandrana summed up the session by saying, “Process Engineering must  keep in mind the important aspects of instrumentation and process control.”
