Objective of the Session:

The objective of this expert lecture was to introduce undergraduate students to the concept of Smart Protection Systems. The session aimed to highlight how conventional protection methods are evolving towards intelligent, automated, and IoT-enabled systems to meet the demands of modern power grids and industries.

Prof. M. A. Maniar explained the limitations of traditional protection schemes and how smart protection integrates digital relays, IoT devices, cloud monitoring, and artificial intelligence for predictive and adaptive protection. The lecture emphasized the role of data analytics in fault detection, condition monitoring of switchgear, and ensuring grid reliability. Real-world case studies of smart substations and industrial automation systems were also shared.

Outcome:

After attending this lecture, participants:

  • Understood the evolution from conventional to smart protection systems.
  • Learned about the role of IoT, AI, and cloud computing in power system protection.
  • Explored applications of smart protection in smart grids, industries, and renewable integration.
  • Gained awareness about predictive maintenance and real-time fault monitoring techniques.
  • Were motivated to explore projects and research in digital relays, automation, and Industry based protection systems.

The lecture concluded with an interactive Q&A session, where students asked about challenges in implementing smart protection in developing countries and the career opportunities in this field. Feedback was highly positive, with students appreciating the relevance of the topic in modern power systems.
