5th semester students of Mechanical Engineering Department of Vishwakarma Government Engineering College, Chandkheda visited Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology: Institute of Petrochemicals Technology (IPT), Vatva, Ahmedabad. The main objective of visit was to make students explore new technologies and automation in the field of manufacturing, testing and quality improvement. At the end of the visit, question and answer session was conducted to solve students’ queries.

Learning Lessons/Discussion Points:

• Injection moulding process, which minimizes moulding cost and is a highly repeatable way of producing plastic and elastomer parts with high precision.
• Method of compounding, for mixing various materials (polymers, additives, etc.) by compounding machine.
• Extrusion blow moulding, used for creating medium to large hollow parts with complex shapes by inflating softened thermoplastic hollow parison against a cooled surface of a closed mould.
• Various types of defects arising during moulding process, their causes and procedures for avoiding these defects.
• Inspection and evaluation of moulds and dies for identifying and rectifying any deviation and defects.
• Operating processes on CNC lathe machine, CNC milling machine, Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), 3D Printer, etc.
• Design procedure of moulds used for injection moulding and blow moulding.
• Creating 3D model or measuring contours and scanning an entire shape by making use of Blue Light 3D scanner.
